Acupuncture

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is part of the traditional medicine of China and one of the oldest forms of healing. It has been practiced for more than 5,000 years. Nowadays, it has become widely accepted in Western culture alongside orthodox medicine. The Chinese discovered that the stimulation of specific areas of the skin affected the functioning of the body's internal organs. It evolved into a system of natural healing as the connection between the skin and the organs was better understood and more sensitive ways of stimulating were devised.

Diagnosis

The first thing that the acupuncturist has to decide is the exact nature of your problem. This will involve a:

  1. Physical examination
  2. Tongue examination
  3. Pulse reading taken at the wrist
  4. Discussion with the patients concerning their healthcare needs

The treatment?

  1. Insertion of very fine needles into acupuncture points to rectify health.
  2. Applying warmth to the acupuncture points to promote the healing process of cold, damp conditions
  3. Dispersing pain and eradicating spasm through electro-acupuncture therapy
  4. Dietry advice
  5. Exercise advise
  6. Herbal remedies (if required)

Frequency of treatment?

Weekly to start with and then, as you improve, less frequently. The rate of improvement varies according to factors such as age, constitution and severity of disease. Some people respond dramatically to treatment, others require more extensive therapy.

What conditions can be treated with Acupuncture?

People often ask me if Chinese medicine is appropriate for this, that or the other condition. The answer is: I can treat almost any condition you care to think of and will treat secondary, complaints as a matter of course. How successful treatment will be is purely a question of degree. Patients should think of me as the equivalent of their local General Practitioner. However I do not use drugs and, in many cases, patients are able to reduce their drug intake or cut out drugs completely using Chinese medicine. In my personal experience it is extremely effective in treating:

  1. Arthritis/Rheumatism
  2. Asthma
  3. Back Pain
  4. Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
  5. Gynaecological problems
  6. Hay Fever
  7. Insomnia
  8. Irritable Bowel Syndrome
  9. Migraine/Headache
  10. Multiple Sclerosis
  11. Sports Injury
  12. Stress/Depression/Anxiety

The effects of Acupuncture

In Chinese Medicine the whole person as well as the signs and symptoms is given full consideration. This contrasts with the symptomatic approach which uses treatment formulae for specific conditions and where no consideration is given for the individual as a whole. It targets the root cause of illness and focuses on restoring the the overall energy balance, helping people feel better in a general way. Patients often say that they feel better in themselves. This type of comment reflects such things as greater enjoyment of life, better sleep, improved diet, being more relaxed or increased energy and vitality.
